High Bridge Coalition
The dream of being able once again to walk over the High Bridge took a giant step toward realization in April 2007, when Mayor Bloomberg announced that New York City will restore and reopen the bridge. The High Bridge is New York’s oldest standing bridge and the most celebrated part of the famed Old Croton Aqueduct. Since 2001, the High Bridge Coalition has led a campaign to give this pedestrian bridge, a city and national landmark, new life as a great public space and greenway link.
The High Bridge Coalition is working towards several goals:
- re-establishing The High Bridge as a popular destination, a unique interborough crossing, and the Manhattan-Bronx link in the Old Croton Aqueduct Greenway
- continuing to tell the story of the bridge's historic and cultural significance
- improving the Bronx and Manhattan parks that serve as neighborhood gateways to the bridge
- increasing public waterfront access to the Harlem River
The Coalition aims to accomplish these goals by working with partners who reflect the diversity of the Bronx and Manhattan communities near the bridge, the city, and the region.
The Coalition is working with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to develop a plan for restoring the bridge.
The High Bridge project is supported by the Department of Parks & Recreation, City Parks Foundation, and Partnerships for Parks. A recently-completed four-year Catalyst project helped get the High Bridge Coalition off the ground with staff and funding. The Coalition’s partners are building spirited community support, activating the parks with programming, and targeting new resources. Our thanks go to former Catalyst Coordinator Joseph Sanchez for his dedication and enthusiasm.
